Blackspot- pick it up, See it!

Last night I was among a privileged few (about 500 I understand) to see the NZ premiere of the Hawker Brother's BLACKSPOT. This local independent movie deserves a great deal more attention. This Digital Feature looked great up on the Embassy screen. I would like to describe it as Arthaus Dred. A heady mix of ghost story, dream weave, J-horror, NZ Gothic and featuring a number of tragicomic elements. There were plenty of great laughs in the audience to balance some moments of genuine jump.

Luke Hawker holds his character throughout and is supported by a number of great characters around him. This movie may inevitably be compared to The Locals but this would do both movies a disservice. The Locals was nicely pitched at it target audience but BLACKSPOT is a more assured beast. Clearly this has been made by people who love and know film. It is an essentially NZ film which while acknowledging the international industry captures moments that could only be described as Kiwi. It certainly deserves better attention and distribution around New Zealand.

I was especially taken with the goat. It serves to span the distance between Monty Python's Vorpal Bunny and Greek mythology's Cerberus guarding the gates of a mysterious underworld.
What a wonderful film to see just before the international Film Festival but what a shame it isn't in the Festival.
